On July 17th former Vice President Al Gore challenged America to switch to 100% renewable energy sources within the next ten years. Currently, 85% of all energy consumed in the U.S. comes from non-renewable fossil fuels ( coal, oil and natural gas) powering 2/3 of our electricity and most of our vehicles (US Department of Energy). Over 90% of Greenhouse Gases emitted in the US comes from the combustion of fossil fuels (Wikipedia).

The We Can Solve It Foundation, founded by Gore, calls for a new energy plan which includes “solar thermal with storage, geothermal, wind, solar photovolactics, biomass, exsiting nuclear and hydropower and coal and natural gas power if they are able to capture the carbon” (We Can Solve It Foundation). While some chalk the concept up to reverie, with global investments in Green energy projects increasing last year by 60% (to 148 billion), Gore’s proposal may not be such a pipe dream after all (United Nations Environment Programme).

What you can do:

  • Include this copy of The Foundation’s letter to your power companies with your next utility bill
  • What you can do at home
  • Call or write to local officials. Click here for phone scripts and sample emails from the Foundation.
