Healthy Children, Healthy Planet

Where: Stratford Ecological Center

Description: In this 8-week discussion course, join others in exploring how the pervasive effects of advertising, media, and our consumer culture can influence a child’s view of the world; discuss ways to create meaningful family times and healthful environments for children, and explore ways to develop a child’s connection to nature, and to foster creativity.

Green Families

Oct 7, 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Where: Stratford Ecological Center

Description: This group is designed as a social forum and play group based around principles of simplicity, green living, and conscious parenting. Join us for a monthly family activity at Stratford. First experience is free. Yearly membership is $10/person or $20/family. This month we’ll go on a fall walk around the Stratford preserve and fields to see the beautiful fall colors.

Open Bike Shop @ Third Hand

Where: 174 E 5th Ave (map)

Description: Third Hand Bicycle Cooperative is open to the public. During open shop hours you can access tools and bike stands, purchase used bicycles, receive assistance with mechanics, and volunteer.

Composting 101: Franklin

Where: Park Conservatory
Description: Join Bill Dawson, Growing to Green Community Gardening Outreach specialist for a hands-on demonstration. Learn the ins and outs of the greens and the browns of composting. Put those autumn leaves to good use and create compost with them.  Learn how to create and maintain a compost pile, and what to do with the compost you make. Meet at the Conservatory main entrance. Rain may cancel – please call ahead.

Building a Greenhouse from Plastic Pop Bottles

Description: Come spend the day with us learning how to build your own greenhouse using discarded pop bottles.

Where: Nelson Park picnic shelter (Clifton Ave. east of Nelson Rd, north of E. Broad St)

Description: Leisurely bike ride along the paved Alum Creek Greenway into Three Creeks Park (by SR-104).  Approx. 9 miles RT, or turn around anytime.
Upon our return, FACT will serve complimentary picnic lunch! Bring a dish or snack to share, if you’d like.Donations appreciated.
Riders should wear bike helmets, and please ensure your wheels are in tune prior to departure.

Fall Foliage Hike

Where: Wolf Run Park

Description: Enjoy an exhilarating hike on October 19th led by a park naturalist and take in the breathtaking beauty of Knox County’s autumnal foliage at the  annual Fall Foliage Hike.  The hiking program begins at 2:00pm and ends at 3:30pm at Wolf Run Park, Yauger Road. Wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

Herbal Study Group

Where: Stratford Ecological Center

Description: Explore the many uses of wild and cultivated plants. Each month the group explores a different herbal topic and works together in Stratford’s herb garden, tending, harvesting and learning from the plants. First experience is free. Yearly membership is $10/person or $20/family.

Rain Garden Technical Workshop – Central OH Rain Garden Initiative:

Where: Ohio Department of Transportation, 1980 W. Broad St.

Description: The Central Ohio Rain Garden Initiative is pleased to announce it will be holding its kick-off Rain Garden Technical Workshop and rain garden installation on Oct. 21 and 22! This two-day workshop will include: rain garden installation at ODOT, technical information, and presentations. This workshop is geared toward professional landscapers, engineers, designers, consultants, municipal leaders, developers, etc.

Family Farm Chores

Description: Bring your family to the farm to experience morning animal chores. Youngsters will collect eggs, water the animals, feed hay and grain, and get a chance to help milk the goats. Dress for dirt.
