EPEAT - Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool – EPEAT (www.epeat.net) – enables purchasers looking for greener IT products to address dozens of environmental performance attributes in a meaningful way.

EPEAT (www.epeat.net) is a consensus-based environmental performance rating system that was developed in a stakeholder process supported by US EPA. The standard criteria and functioning are formalized in IEEE Standard 1680 for the Environmental Assessment of Personal Computer Products, and the system is managed by the nonprofit Green Electronics Council. EPEAT currently covers desktops, laptops and monitors and is expanding to address printers, TVs, servers and mobile devices (cell phones, PDAs) over the next year or two. The original IT standard will also ratchet upward on a regular basis to continue to push design in the direction of more sustainable materials, processes and devices.

EPEAT currently addresses 23 mandatory and 28 optional environmental performance criteria covering energy efficiency (Energy Star compliance mandatory), toxics reduction (RoHS mandatory), provision of takeback and recycling service (mandatory), greener materials choices (recycled, biobased) , ease of disassembly and recycling, life cycle extension, packaging, and company performance. Products register at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels in EPEAT, depending on how many of the optional criteria they meet. (Criteria overview at http://www.epeat.net/Criteria.aspx ) And an Environmental Benefits Calculator allows purchasers to estimate the benefits of their purchase of EPEAT-registered products by product type and ratings tier.

Dozens of manufacturers participate in EPEAT, with 900+ base-model products registered (the equivalent of ~ 25,000 configured models). Nearly all global manufacturers and numerous local or regional manufacturing companies are registering products that conform with the EPEAT criteria (Participating manufacturers list at http://www.epeat.net/Companies.aspx ) Already nearly $60 billion in contracts – US and Canadian national government, state, local, enterprise, higher education - contain EPEAT requirements, creating a huge incentive for manufacturers to provide a steady stream of registered products.

Choosing the highest EPEAT-rated product appropriate for their needs allows purchasers to immediately and significantly reduce the environmental impact of their computing. Search the product database, see participating manufacturers, examine product rating criteria, see environmental benefits estimates, review verification procedures, and read media coverage at www.epeat.net

Many of the tips evolve from things we can do in our personal lives. It's painful to watch a business, which could be your employer, be so unfriendly to the earth. You take the steps at home and have to watch waste at work. Being green should become a way of life for all.
